We are overjoyed that SUPERFLEX is joining the House…
“House Of Peace will give humans a space to slow down and consider the possibilities of peace in consort with the natural environment. But what about the peace of other species? Can we imagine peace without imagining peace for our fellow creatures? Can we have peace if we do not consider other species’ need for rest and calm?
In this spirit, SUPERFLEX proposes integrating elements of interspecies architecture into
House Of Peace , using the methodology we have developing for several years. SUPERFLEX’s underwater structures provide ocean life with places to grow, nest, and rest, helping marine biodiversity to thrive in a calm environment. Most recently, SUPERFLEX has been working with WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) on Super Reef, a vision to build at least 55 km2 of reef along the coast of Denmark. This project aims to foster healthy ocean ecosystems while bringing humans closer to the water, allowing for contact with life below the surface. To this end, SUPERFLEX has written a charter laying out the principles of Super Reef, one of which is precisely that the reef should create a peaceful space:
Make space for rest and recreation. A reef, like a city, should accommodate the leisure time of its inhabitants. It should have places to hide and play, where creatures can idle without worrying about being seen or eaten. Resting in order to preserve energy is important for all species, and so the reef should also be a spatial setting that allows marine life to rest. Some reefs might also provide space for humans to play – a space for people to go underwater and experience the reef up close, a chance to feel more connected to the ocean.
House Of Peace is designed to emphasize the meeting between sky and water, connecting above and below. SUPERFLEX’s contribution to the project will be an underwater space for interspecies interaction, where humans and other species can experience and contemplate peace”
